Happy Birthday To Our Dear Honourable Chancellor, Imo State University, Owerri (Prof. Mrs. Victoria Adaobi Obasi)

Today, Friday, April 14th, 2017. the Vice-Chancellor of Imo State University,  Professor Mrs. Victoria Adaobi Obasi, is 65 years old.

To those who know the Vice-Chancellor very well, Professor Mrs. Victoria Adaobi Obasi is a perfect example of a silent achiever, a fair but firm leader, a veritable team player and a visionary team leader, a listening and emphatic leader who cannot stand seeing anybody treated unjustly.

Let me start introducing the woman of the day, by swinging through the pendulum of his enduring legacies @ 65.

Professor Victoria Adaobi Obasi was born on 14th April 1952 in Oguta, Imo State. She had her Primary Education at Holy Rosary Primary School, Oguta and
Secondary Education at the Holy Rosary Secondary School, Ihioma in Orlu Local Government Area, graduating in 1971 in flying colours. In 1976, she enrolled at the prestigious Alvan Ikoku College of Education, Owerri for her National Certificate of Education (NCE), and later had her one year mandatory National Youth Service at the Women Teachers’ College, Enugu, in 1980.

Not satisfied with the NCE, the young Adaobi then proceeded to the famous University of Hull in England for further studies from where she obtained a Bachelor, Masters and Doctorate Degrees in Education in 1984, 1985 and 1989 respectively, winning the University’s Bursary award for excellence consecutively for 1987, 1988 and 1989.


Her lecturing career started at the Imo State University, Owerri, from where she rose through the ranks to become a Professor.

In the course of her academic career, Obasi was the Head of Department for five years and later made a sub-Dean of the Faculty of Education. As a Professor, she was a Member of the University Senate and afterwards, elected to the Governing Council of the University representing the Senate.

She has served as External Examiner to many Higher Institutions. She was the Secretary General of the National Association for Women in Academics and Director, Women and Gender Studies of IMSU.

In 2011, she was appointed the Honorable Commissioner for Education, Imo State; a position she occupied until 2013. She worked closely with the Executive Governor of the State to initiate the take-off and implementation of the State’s free education programme.

Following the dissolution of the State Executive Council in 2013, Professor Adaobi Obasi was appointed Special Adviser to the Governor of Imo State on Education and thereafter, appointed as Honorable Commissioner for Local Government and Rural Development.

On June 1 2015, she was appointed Acting Vice Chancellor of Imo State University with immediate effect. She officially assumed that position on 2nd June, 2015.

Professor Obasi is a woman of many firsts. She is the first woman to be appointed as Commissioner for Local Government and Rural Development since the creation of the State as well as the first woman to be appointed Vice Chancellor of the State owned University.

As a scholar, Professor Obasi has authored five books and written forty-five journal articles in reputable National and International journals.

As a professional, she is an active member of many professional bodies including the Nigerian Academy of Education; College of Preceptors, England; World Council of Curriculum and Instruction and a Fellow, Curriculum Organization of Nigeria. She also holds Fellowships of many professional associations.

She is a philanthropist, a Lady Knight of St. Christopher, a Community leader and Mobilizer, a Chief, a wife, a mother and grandmother; and an educationist par excellence.

Professor Adaobi Obasi is married to Sir (Chief) Charles Medo Obasi, a man who has been her pillar of strength and supported her quest to reach the zenith of her profession. Their marriage is blessed with five children.
