TRANSPORT FARE RAISES BY 100% IN IMSU - STUDENT LEADERS MOVE AGAINST IT
The transport fare within Imo state university have increased by almost 100 per cent due to fuel scarcity witnessed during the yuletide period. A journey which used to cost N50 from Imsu front gate to any part of the students' alliance now cost N100 - N150 increasing by 100%.
Despite the fall in petrol price, motor operators within the school have refused to adjust despite series of engagement with their leaders.
Student pioneers in Imsu have kicked against the exploitation saying that the exorbitant fare must be brought back to the original N50.
One of the student leaders Cmrd. Promise Uzoma, SUG 16th republic director of transport among other pioneers who spoke with Imsu Info-scope led by Imsu Elijah pointed that motor operators are squeezing out innocent students despite the fall in the price of petrol maintaining that it was time to hit the bull's-eye to achieve the best result.
He said "We have called for different meetings with the transport worker and drivers, pleaded several times with them and have also bargained severally with them but all to no avail. "They kept on extorting IMO stars even as the price of fuel have reduced, the price of transportation yet didn't reduce".
He went further "ENOUGH is ENOUGH we are taking the bull by the horn. Transportation around IMSU axis MUST BE N50".
The struggle to bring back the original price started on Monday 5th January with bishops court alliance which recorded huge success and now the student leaders have unanimously agreed extending it to other students area.
Among pioneers who gave out their time to the struggle is the personal assistant to the Chief of staff, Imo state Government house Hon. Kaycee Chris Boffin Iheme; The Students Staff Adviser IMSU Prof. Prince Ezeanyika among other notable big shots.
It was further disclosed that sensitization on the reasons to adjust the exorbitant cost was also carried out.
