Buhari Deceiving Nigerians, Not Interested In Education – ASUU.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has accused President Muhammdu Buhari administration of not showing interest in the education sector.
Dr Igbana Ajir, the Zonal Coordinator of ASUU Nsukka Zone, laid the accusation at a press conference in Enugu on Tuesday. According to Ajir, henceforth, ASUU would not support any presidential candidate who does not have any interest in education, starting with the 2019 general elections.
Ajir who was flanked by Chairman of ASUU-Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) chapter and other union leaders, said the failure of the government to honour agreement reached with the union clearly demonstrate that it has no interest in addressing the rot and decay in the Nigerian University System.
The union leader said ASUU had a comprehensive negotiation with the Federal and State governments on many issues that bothered on funding of universities, salaries and allowances of academic staff, but most of the issues were yet to be implemented.
Ajir recalled that the union went on strike on August 12 to press for the implementation of 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement and 2013 memorandum of understanding signed by both parties.
According to him, the strike culminated in the signing of an agreement and subsequent suspension of the strike by the union to allow the students to return to the classroom while the government speeds up action on the implementation of the agreement.
